The Institute, established in 1978, is an integral part of life at Concordia University and the broader Montréal community. The Institute is a college of Concordia University, dedicated to studying the conditions of women's lives. Each year, the Institute offers a variety of exciting courses which explore the historical and contemporary aspects of women's oppression and resistance.
The Institute strives to stimulate the investigation, understanding and communication of the historical and contemporary roles of women in society, and to encourage women to develop their full creative potential.
Keeping the Institute up and running requires a great deal of effort on the part of many individuals. The Principal is the public face of the Institute, and liaises with the University Administration concerning Institute life and resources. While the Principal's role is important, the involvement of different committees are central to the success of Institute life.
Yet the Institute is more than a place where classes are held. The Institute also organizes and sponsors different events of interest to feminists - from academic presentations to community based conferences. The Institute strives to be a dynamic place where women both inside and outside the university can come together and reflect on the history of women's liberation, the contemporary situation of women, as well as future initiatives that can help forge a world committed to equality and social justice for all.
